Robert Ljubicic:
“That’s why I chose Croatia”
Robert Ljubicic immediately found his feet at AEK Athens. Unlike his brother Dejan, the Viennese would rather be on the pitch with Luka Modric and co.
The atmosphere in the stadium is one of the best I've ever experienced, the supporters are very special," is how Robert Ljubicic describes the atmosphere at AEK Athens.
"Can be eighth again"
The ex-Rapidler (contract until 2029) has been playing for the Greek champions for just under a month - and has already left his mark. After four substitute appearances and two goals, the 24-year-old was recently allowed to start for the first time in the 3-3 draw against Aris Thessaloniki. "Coach Almeyda did exactly the right thing. I haven't played much at Dinamo Zagreb recently." And when I did, it was at left-back. "Here I can play as an eighth-back again. That's the position I feel most comfortable in."
Team-mate and former Austrian team goalkeeper Cican Stankovic ensures the feel-good factor in Athens. "He gave me tips and made it easier for me to get started," says the left-footer. "I can concentrate fully on the sport and will fight for my body."
"Listened to my heart"
Also for the one with the red and white check pattern. While brother and Cologne legionnaire Dejan plays for Austria, Robert opted for Croatia
The problem: team boss Zlatko Dalić hasn't called him yet, so Ljubicic, who has already proven himself in the Champions League with Zagreb, is still waiting for his team debut. Does he regret his decision in retrospect? "Certainly not! I talked about it for a long time with friends and family, but in the end I listened to my heart," says the playmaker. "I really wanted to be on the pitch with this golden generation around Luka Modric, which is one of the reasons I chose Croatia."
Which is not to say that his second home country leaves him cold. "Austria has given me a lot. I grew up here, matured as a footballer at St. Pölten and Rapid and I'm very grateful for that!"
Back to AEK: The league runners-up continue tomorrow at Lamia. "We have the ambition to beat everyone, we want to defend the title."
