Avalanche victims were able to dig themselves out

Three Slovakians were on a deep snow descent on the Mölltal Glacier in Carinthia when a snow slab suddenly broke loose.

The accident took its course at 9.45 a.m. during the descent at an altitude of 2,700 meters above sea level. "A snow slab came loose and one ski was lost. So the three Slovakians, a 24-year-old and two 27-year-olds, tried to locate it using an avalanche probe," the police report. "But then another unknown winter sports enthusiast triggered a 50-metre-wide snow slab above the searchers."

Caught and buried by an avalanche
The three Slovakian citizens were caught in the avalanche and buried. "The 24-year-old was completely buried, but fortunately the two men were only partially buried. They were able to free themselves," said the police. "The woman's foot was still sticking out of the masses of snow." Her companions and witnesses who had arrived dug her out immediately. All three winter sports enthusiasts miraculously remained unharmed.
