State examines project
City rejects plans for excavation landfill site
A stir in Weidlingbach near Klosterneuburg (Lower Austria): The local council is against the plans for an excavated earth landfill site. Now it's the province's turn.
The application by a company to build a new landfill site for excavated soil in Weidlingbach is currently causing uproar and protests in Klosterneuburg. It concerns a 3.14-hectare area in the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve, which is to be used for landfill for around 20 years.
State examines project
The city government rejected the project years ago, but the official procedure of the state of Lower Austria is now in the final stages of examination. Mayor Christoph Kaufmann: "The entire municipal council rejects the landfill, the population in Weidlingtal rejects it and I hope that the environmental ombudsman will also reject this project." After all, the area is designated as a flora and fauna habitat and bird sanctuary.
Local environmental councillor Leopold Spitzbart believes that the additional truck journeys would have a severe impact on the Natura 2000 site. This would also have a negative impact on the numerous hiking and mountain bike routes in the immediate vicinity.
