Germany: Four dead in fire at retirement home

According to initial reports, four people have died in a fire at a German retirement home in Bedburg-Hau in the Lower Rhine region. Police announced early on Monday morning that the fire broke out on Monday night.

At least 23 people were also injured, including 21 residents, said a police spokeswoman in Kleve. One person's life is in danger, a firefighter and a police officer were seriously injured. 46 residents of the retirement home had to be evacuated, it said. The cause of the fire was still unclear.

Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) had previously reported. When the fire department arrived at around 5 a.m., the situation was dramatic, WDR reported, citing a fire department spokesperson. Some of the firefighters had to break windows in order to rescue residents.
