Protests in Amstetten
Construction stop for scrap yard
Despite the lack of a permit, the construction of a scrap yard was started in Amstetten. Following a complaint from the town, even the state intervened. The protests continue.
The air is currently thick in Greinsfurth in the south-west of Amstetten. Ever since it became known that a scrap yard was to be built in the immediate vicinity of the nearest housing estate, its residents have been up in arms against the project. Politicians in the local council have also unanimously spoken out against the project with a negative opinion. The concerns are too great, especially due to the noise.
This is clearly the wrong place to build the scrap yard. It doesn't belong in a residential area!
Manuel Scherscher, Ortsvorsteher
However, the headwind did not change the fact that the company applied to the authorities for the construction and operation of the scrap yard. But they didn't want to wait any longer for a positive outcome: the first excavators were already on the site recently. "We immediately informed the state, which reacted by stopping construction," explains local head Manuel Scherscher.
Soil stabilization work on site
However, the company assures us that they have only carried out soil stabilization work in consultation with the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments because they cannot rule out finds from Roman times. No further work will be carried out for the time being.
In the meantime, the state is examining whether the requirements of the Waste Management Act are even met. The project may even be subject to an EIA. However, the process is only just beginning.
