Couple plunged down an embankment in their car: Woman dead

Tragic accident in the Lower Mühlviertel: An 85-year-old man drove his VW Golf off the road on a sharp right-hand bend. The small car plunged ten meters down a steep embankment. He survived seriously injured, his wife (78) died after being flown to hospital by helicopter.

The fatal traffic accident occurred on Friday morning. At around 10.30 a.m., an 85-year-old man from the Zwettl district (Lower Austria) was driving on the L1434 from Pabneukirchen in the direction of St. Georgen am Walde. His 78-year-old wife was in the passenger seat.

Touched by a tree
While still in the municipality of Pabneukirchen, the car left the road on a sharp right-hand bend for unknown reasons, hit a tree with the driver's side and crashed into the steeply sloping ditch. Both occupants were trapped in the vehicle as a result of the accident and had to be freed by the fire department.

Two rescue helicopters in action
The couple was seriously injured and flown by rescue helicopter to two hospitals in Linz. The 78-year-old died shortly afterwards as a result of her injuries.
