Children missing after family drama in the USA
When police officers were called to an operation near the US metropolis of Philadelphia on Wednesday, they were struck down by shots fired from a residential building. Shortly afterwards, a fire rages in the building and prevents officers from gaining access. It is feared that up to eight family members were in the burnt-down house - including several children.
The police had been called to the East Lansdowne area in the afternoon because shots had allegedly been fired at an eleven-year-old girl in the street. When the police arrived at the scene, a gunman immediately opened fire from inside the house. Two police officers were shot and taken to hospital.
Public prosecutor: "I don't know if they are dead"
A fire finally broke out in the house for reasons that are still unclear. "Our fear is that there are multiple people in this house," said District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer. "I don't know if they're dead."
He made it clear that the emergency services would not be able to search for the missing people in the building until Thursday morning (local time) because it was still on fire. It also remained unclear whether the reports about the alleged shots fired at the girl were correct. The entire street was evacuated. The background to the incident was initially unclear.
