The past January was the strongest January ever for wind power in Austria. As reported by IG Windkraft on Sunday, a total of 1148 gigawatt hours (GWh) of wind power were generated.

This was 53 percent more than the January average of the past five years. This means that 20.7 percent of electricity consumption was covered by wind power. The wind power production record was broken four times this month, according to Stefan Moidl, Managing Director of IG Windkraft.

"Winter is wind energy time"
On an annual average, wind energy currently supplies twelve percent of electricity consumption in Austria. "Winter is wind energy time," Moidl is pleased to say: "Wind power can really come into its own at precisely the time when a lot of energy is needed. These figures show this once again in an impressive way."

Despite the record, however, the industry is currently lacking the impetus to expand new wind farms, criticized IG Windkraft. "Changes are needed at all political levels so that the energy transition can finally be accelerated," demanded Managing Director Stefan Moidl. "At the moment, we are still stuck in the stop-and-go policy of the past."
