Germany: Majority believe democracy is at risk
A clear majority of citizens in Germany believe that democracy in the Federal Republic is at risk. For a good three weeks now, tens of thousands of people have been taking to the streets all over Germany to protest against the right and the AfD.
In a survey* conducted by the opinion research institute INSA for "Bild am Sonntag", 61 percent said they believe democracy is at risk. A third of respondents did not share this opinion.
The survey was triggered by research conducted by the media outlet Correctiv into a meeting between radical right-wingers and individual politicians from the AfD, CDU and Werteunion in Potsdam in November.
The demonstrations against right-wing extremism continued at the weekend with tens of thousands of participants.
Police: 120,000 at demonstration against the right
On Saturday, well over 100,000 people gathered in Berlin. A human chain was planned under the motto "We are the firewall". Behind the action against hate and for tolerance is an alliance called "Hand in Hand" with more than 1,300 organizations.
More than half of the survey participants (55%) welcome these demonstrations, while 26% oppose them and 12% do not care.
*For the survey, the institute interviewed 1002 adult German citizens on February 1 and 2.
