For centuries, the alpine summer has been an integral part of the farming calendar. When the last snow has melted and the first bells ring out on the mountain slopes, a very special time begins in the Salzburg region: the alpine summer. From June through the end of September, cows, sheep, and goats make their way up to the alpine pastures, where mountain huts open their doors and warmly welcome hikers. Up here, where time moves more slowly, everything tastes a little more authentic: the cheese sandwich is handmade, the butter is churned by hand, and the doughnuts sizzle golden-brown in hot oil—most cooking is still done on a wood-fired stove. And it’s all done with skill, patience, and love.

On the path between heaven and home
But the Salzburg Alpine Summer is far more than a culinary journey. It’s an immersion into a world full of authenticity, tranquility, and genuine hospitality. At 1,740 active alpine pastures—164 of which are particularly authentic alpine summer huts—you can experience a centuries-old way of life that is regaining new significance today.

As you wander among lush green meadows, crystal-clear streams, and rustic huts, you’ll quickly sense that the mountains possess a special power—and this is most intensely felt during long-distance hikes. The Salzburg Alpine Trail stretches over 350 kilometers through the Pongau region and connects 25 stages full of enjoyment, breathtaking views, and authentic encounters. Along the route, 120 mountain huts invite you to take a break. The trail follows the symbol of the “Blue Gentian”—a sign of alpine authenticity.

Hiking Without Heavy Luggage 
No less impressive is the Königsweg in the Hochkönig region. You hike the trail in five stages—comfortably, without luggage, which is transported from lodging to lodging. Those who wish can attempt the ascent of the Hochkönig itself—including an overnight stay at the Matrashaus at an elevation of 2,941 meters.

A bit wilder, but just as fascinating, is the Pinzga Hatscha, a long-distance hiking trail through six regions of the Salzburg Pinzgau. Over approximately 390 kilometers, you’ll encounter mystical gorges, vast high plateaus, and quiet alpine pastures where you’ll be greeted with genuine warmth. Whether you’re a beginner, a family, or a seasoned hiker—the routes can be customized to suit your needs and offer a perfect balance of natural wonders and the charm of mountain huts.
