The Czech Republic was unable to secure a victory on the second matchday of World Cup Group A. Against South Africa, they had the game under control after a goal by Michal Sadilek in the sixth minute. However, they failed to seal the deal. That came back to haunt them in the 83rd minute, when Teboho Mokoena scored a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1. As a result, both teams must now worry about advancing ahead of the final matchday of the group stage. 

The Czech Republic let their first victory at the World Cup in North America slip away in the closing minutes and now face an uncertain path to the Round of 16. In a matchup between the two teams that had lost their openers in Group A, the Czech Republic and South Africa played to a 1-1 draw (0-0) on Thursday in Atlanta. Michal Sadilek gave the Europeans an early lead (6th minute), but their passivity afterward was punished. Teboho Mokoena equalized in the 83rd minute with a penalty kick awarded for a handball.

Czech Republic head coach Miroslav Koubek brought in five new players compared to the 1-2 loss to South Korea. The changes seemed to pay off at first. The Czechs looked improved, entering the match with plenty of energy and determination. Just 45 seconds in, Patrik Schick had a huge chance, but his uncontested header from seven meters out was a miserable miss. Their second offensive move paid off. Following a long throw-in, the South African defense was completely disorganized, and Sadilek successfully finished off the Czechs’ well-executed combination play.

South Africa Harmless on Offense
As the match progressed, the Czechs retreated. South Africa dictated the play and showed promise, but lacked the necessary finishing touch in the final third. Iqraam Rayners couldn’t get a controlled shot off (16th minute), and Thapelo Maseko failed to capitalize on a mistake by goalkeeper Matej Kovar (45+4).

In the second half as well, the Czechs had good chances for a perfect start: a shot by Vladimir Darida was blocked (46'), and a header by Schick was too central (47'). The South Africans continued to dictate the play, though they remained uninspired in the penalty area and often resorted to long-range shots, which usually missed the target by a wide margin. However, they averted defeat with a penalty kick. After Pavel Sulc was struck on the hand inside the penalty area, Mokoena confidently converted the spot kick to score the well-deserved equalizer.

Both teams head into the final round next Wednesday (local time) with one point each and must win to have a realistic chance at advancing. The Czech Republic will face co-host Mexico, while South Africa will take on South Korea.

The 39-year-old American, who refereed the Women’s World Cup final two years ago, is the second female referee in history to officiate a men’s World Cup match. Four years ago in Qatar, French referee Stephanie Frappart officiated the match between Germany and Costa Rica.
