Austria’s wine harvest slumps by a fifth

The wine harvest in Austria has not been as bad as in 2024 for 14 years. Late frosts, drought and heavy rainfall have meant that winegrowers have produced a fifth less wine - and we can drink less Austrian wine.

Last year, Austrian winegrowers produced 1.87 million hectoliters of wine, according to Statistics Austria. That may sound like a lot, but it is a fifth less than in 2023 and the lowest figure in 14 years. 

Less white wine than red wine
The decline was particularly sharp for white wine, down 22% to 1.29 million hectoliters. But the news is not really any better for red wine lovers either: red wine production fell by 13% to 578,600 hectoliters compared to 2023.

Overall, the production volume of white and red wine also remained 22% below the five-year average.

Particularly little wine in Lower Austria
The decline in production affected all major wine-growing regions in Austria. The biggest drop was in Lower Austria, where production was almost a quarter lower than in 2023 at 1.18 million hectoliters. Styria recorded a drop of 16% to 159,200 hectoliters, while the harvest in Burgenland fell by 14% to 504,000 hectoliters.
