Freighter stranded off the coast of Newfoundland

A huge container ship has run aground off the west coast of Newfoundland in Canada. When the coast guard rescued the crew of 20, high waves were crashing against the freighter. A cable winch had to be used.

The container ship had reported a power failure during a force twelve storm. The waves were up to six meters high at the time. The crew was therefore unable to drop anchor and the ship ran aground in Lark Harbor on Saturday morning.

Three days later, it has now been reported that the 20 crew members were taken off the ship by helicopter. They were uninjured in the incident. The rescue was dramatic as high waves continued to crash against the freighter.

Video footage shows strong winds and the ship being moved onto its side. The sky is gray and cloudy.

The ship, which flies the flag of Liberia, is now to be salvaged. The cause and exact extent of the shipwreck are still unclear. The freighter was on its way from Montreal to Corner Brook in Newfoundland.
