Shooting at US school: two dead, two injured

At a US high school in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday, a 17-year-old shot and killed a student and then killed himself. The shots were fired in the cafeteria and two other people were injured by grazing shots.

According to a police spokesman, two security officers were in the building, but not near the scene of the crime. When they arrived, the shooter had already shot himself, the spokesperson explained.

Perpetrator streamed the crime via livestream
According to media reports, the suspected shooter broadcast part of his crime via livestream on an online platform. According to the newspaper "The Tenessean", the platform announced that the video had been removed and the account blocked. Two school police officers were at the school but arrived at the scene too late to stop the shooter.

School was placed on lockdown
School officials immediately initiated security measures. The school was placed on lockdown while a SWAT team searched the building to ensure there was no further danger. Students were bussed to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital after being released by police, where a reunification center was set up for parents.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee expressed dismay over the events and thanked first responders for their quick action. In a statement, he emphasized that the state's thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the school community.

Memories of shooting rampage at elementary school
The high school is attended by around 2000 students. At the end of March 2023, a female gunman killed three children, each aged nine, and three adults at a private Christian elementary school in Nashville.
