Bomb found during demolition work in Dresden

A bomb has been found during demolition work on the partially collapsed Carola Bridge in Dresden. Specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service were called in. The World War II relic was discovered in the water of the Elbe under the bridge.

The banks of the bridge were cordoned off in the area. According to initial information from the police, it is probably a World War II bomb.

For the demolition of the prestressed concrete bridge, a construction road has been poured into the river from the Dresden old town side. The unexploded bomb was found in this area in the morning.

Specialists have to examine the bomb
It will only be possible to decide how to proceed once the explosive ordnance experts have arrived. If the bomb is not armed, it could possibly simply be removed, the police spokesman explained. If the bomb is armed and needs to be defused, a restricted area is usually set up around the site.

Demolition work has been underway on the Carola Bridge for months. A bridge train collapsed unexpectedly in September and fell into the Elbe. The entire bridge has to be demolished.
