Museum explains exhibitions in simple language

The Museum der Moderne is now explaining its exhibitions in easy-to-understand language. The aim is to break down existing barriers and open up the museum to people from all educational backgrounds.

Admittedly, understanding art can be difficult. Technical terms, art historical explanations and historical classifications can make museums a daunting place for some people. The recently published study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) gives further hope. Because: 29 percent of adults in Austria have considerable problems with reading texts at all!

The Museum der Moderne in Salzburg wants to attract precisely this target group to the museum in future. "All our exhibitions are therefore accompanied by texts in simple language. This is how we want to break down barriers," explains Director Harald Krejci. The simplified texts are printed in large letters on the wall next to the works on display.

There are many texts to prepare for the coming year. The artists Nika Neelova, Rob Voerman and Jacqueline Mesmaeker play with the idea of cyclical recurrence in their solo exhibitions. In the so-called Public Program, socially relevant topics are also addressed outside of the exhibitions.

With the exhibition texts in simple language, we want to break down barriers. Our museum should be open to everyone.

In cooperation with the Salzburg Museum, the Museum der Moderne is a guest at the Rupertinum from March to October. It will be showing the history of photography in Salzburg.

Creative workshop series await children and young people. Admission for under-19s will remain free in 2025.
