Several injured in crash after tire burst

An accident on the Westautobahn near Melk (Lower Austria) involving six vehicles on All Saints' Day resulted in several injuries, some of them serious. One man had to be freed from the wreckage and flown to hospital by emergency helicopter. 

Several people were seriously injured in an accident on the Westautobahn near Melk on All Saints' Day. After a driver hit the concrete crash barrier at around 2.20 p.m., the right front tire of his car burst. He then tried to stop the car.

With serious consequences: The unexpected braking maneuver caused a fatal chain reaction.

In total, six vehicles crashed into each other and one man was trapped in the vehicle during the collision. The seriously injured man had to be freed from the wreckage by the fire department before being flown to hospital by emergency helicopter.

Injured persons taken to St. Pölten
At least three other people required emergency medical treatment at the scene of the accident and then had to be taken to St. Pölten University Hospital. The Westautobahn was closed to traffic in the direction of Vienna for around one and a half hours. The result was a traffic jam several kilometers long.
