Life imprisonment for Pelosi assassin

The perpetrator of the brutal attack on the husband of US politician Nancy Pelosi, a 44-year-old Canadian, has now been sentenced a second time. This time, a court in San Francisco handed down a life sentence against the hammer assassin - without parole.

David DePape had already been sentenced to 30 years in prison in May. Pelosi's family said on Tuesday that the sentence of life imprisonment provides a measure of justice and is "a message to others that political violence against elected officials or their family members will not be tolerated, minimized or condoned".

DePape broke into the home of the then Speaker of the US House of Representatives in San Francisco in October 2022. The supporter of far-right conspiracy myths had targeted the top politician, who was in the capital Washington at the time.

A scuffle broke out between the perpetrator and the 82-year-old. The Canadian inflicted a skull fracture on Paul Pelosi with a hammer. The victim survived the attack, but spent a week in hospital afterwards.
