Valentina (19) feels “like a detective”

19-year-old Valentina is completing her apprenticeship at voestalpine in Linz: as a fourth-year materials technician, Valentina shows that technical professions are by no means just for men.

Valentina has always felt at home in the technical field. Before her apprenticeship, she completed a technical secondary school and then the polytechnic in her home town of Eferding.

"I already knew voestalpine well, as my father often took me to work with him. My brother also works there," says the 19-year-old. Valentina now sees the fact that she chose an apprenticeship in materials technology as a stroke of luck: "I looked at various apprenticeships, but nobody could tell me anything specific about materials technology," she laughs.

As a materials engineer, I take samples of materials or produce them myself to test their properties. There are various methods for this.

"I got to know the job better during taster days and thought it would be something for me - so I applied." As a materials technician, Valentina checks the quality of the various materials that are produced at voestapine. She uses measuring devices and equipment to apply various test methods, documents the results and evaluates them.

Valentina: "I was pleasantly surprised by the versatility of the job. The training is very varied, every day is different. I feel like a detective looking for clues."

Around 410 young professionals are currently being trained at the state-of-the-art training center in Linz. There are around 20 apprenticeships to choose from.
