In August, the most important month of the summer season, the number of overnight stays rose by three percent to more than 21 million. With over 115.6 million overnight stays in 2024, Austria is heading for a new record year in tourism. 

This August, the number of guests rose by 9.6% to 6.1 million compared to August last year and the number of overnight stays increased by 3% to 21.1 million. Almost three quarters of overnight stays were attributable to guests from abroad, which also corresponds to an increase of three percent.

Overnight stays by guests from Germany (up 4.1 percent to 8.57 million), the Netherlands (down 6.5 percent to 1.57 million) and Italy (up three percent to 0.77 million) together accounted for 70.1 percent of all overnight stays by foreign guests.

In 2019, the year before the start of the coronavirus pandemic, 115.3 million overnight stays were reported for January to August.

This is the highest result ever recorded for the first eight months of the year and exceeds the previous record set in 2019.

There was a significant increase in overnight stays by guests from China compared to August 2023, with an increase of 86.9% to 70,000 overnight stays.

Guests from Austria reported 5.38 million overnight stays, an increase of 3.0% compared to the previous year.
