Wien Energie does not want to purchase Russian natural gas

The municipal energy supplier Wien Energie is promising its customers exclusively non-Russian gas for the coming year. In the last few days, the procurement of ten TWh from non-Russian sources has been secured.

Russian gas, which Wien Energie will continue to purchase from Russia until 2027 under current contracts, will be sold on the exchange. This was announced by Wien Energie CEO Michael Strebl and City Councillor for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke on Friday.

"Of course we also want to supply all Viennese people with non-Russian gas beyond 2025," explained Strebl. This has now been fixed for 2025, "setting a standard" and sending a "signal to the market".

However, there are still many questions on the gas market for 2026. For example, whether gas will still be supplied to Europe via Ukraine and what a gas labeling system will look like at EU level.
