Horrific accident in tunnel claimed one life

A terrible traffic accident on Saturday afternoon on the busy Fernpass road in the Tyrolean Außerfern. Several vehicles crashed into each other in the Lermoos tunnel. One driver (62) died at the scene of the accident, three other people were injured.

 

The accident occurred at around 1.15 p.m. in the middle of the tunnel. "The 62-year-old Austrian, who was traveling alone and not wearing a seatbelt in his car in the direction of Reutte, crossed into the oncoming lane for unknown reasons and crashed into the left tunnel wall," said the police. The car then collided with the oncoming car of a 56-year-old German. Another car was involved in the crash.

Unfortunately, all help came too late for the 62-year-old driver. He died at the scene of the accident. The 56-year-old German and his 53-year-old co-driver were seriously injured in the accident and had to be taken to the district hospital in Reutte by the ambulance service.

"A 55-year-old German woman also suffered injuries, was treated as an outpatient at the district hospital in Reutte and discharged into home care," said the executive. His 46-year-old female passenger and his parents in the back seat - aged 82 and 80 - were uninjured in the accident.

Kilometre-long traffic jam
A large contingent of paramedics, an emergency helicopter, the fire department with around 100 emergency services and the police were deployed. All three vehicles were severely damaged. The Lermoos tunnel was closed until 4.20 p.m. for the recovery and clean-up work. The result was a traffic jam several kilometers long.
