Kayaker discovers a rifle grenade in the river

An amateur sportsman who was paddling down the River Traun on Monday afternoon noticed a suspicious object in the water. He reported his find to the police. An inspection finally revealed that it was probably an explosive device - presumably from the Second World War.

The report of the discovery in the Traun was made at around 4 p.m. on Monday in the area of a gravel pit in Roitham am Traunfall. The police then alerted the Roitham and Windern fire departments to carry out safety work. 

Without a detonator
Two hours later, the demining service of the Austrian Armed Forces arrived. The experts were taken to the discovery site in a fire boat, where it was determined that the grenade was a rifle grenade without a detonator. The war relic was recovered from the river and transported to the Allentsteig military training area, where it is to be destroyed.
