Sub-zero winter temperatures even in Easter week

As the old saying goes, April does what it wants. But fruit growers from the surrounding provinces are currently worried about their crops, the majority of which are already in full bloom. "Die Krone" asked us how Carinthian fruit growers are faring at the moment.

We spoke to Siegfried Quendler from the Carinthian Fruit Growers' Association about the current effects on fruit cultivation: "When it comes to frost, time and temperature play together. Damage only occurs if it happens several times in a row. Fortunately, here in Carinthia we are lagging behind the Styrians in terms of development, because the more the bud is still closed, the more it can withstand frost.

 The problem child at the moment is the apricot. Apples and pears are still far from being at risk."

Tips from a Carinthian nursery
Local gardeners are also relaxed: "Lettuce plants and home-grown cabbages can withstand more than enough - covering them with fleece is possible, but not necessary. Onions and poree also withstand the temperatures well.

Plants from home gardeners are usually more cold-resistant and can withstand more than those from the DIY store!

Weather situation: improvement in sight?
According to the weather forecast, the rest of the week will bring us moderate morning frost almost every day. "In the nights up to Thursday, it could even be as low as minus six degrees, until things start to pick up again on Friday. Holy Saturday will be frost-free and temperatures of up to 16 degrees can be expected over the holidays," according to the Ubimet weather service.
