“Online flirt” costs Carinthian thousands of euros

A promised fling turned out to be a serious scam for a 51-year-old man from the district of Klagenfurt Land. A woman from Kazakhstan he met on a dating platform gave the man hope that she would move to Austria.

In mid-January, contact was established between the man and the alleged Kazakh citizen. Once sufficient trust had been built up, the woman promised the man that she would continue their love affair in Austria. In order for the relationship to develop better, she would move to Austria. However, she would need money to obtain a visa. 

The woman did not exist
The man transferred several thousand euros to a Kazakh bank account in three transactions. After enquiring at the consulate in Kazakhstan, the 51-year-old was informed that the woman in question did not exist and that the identity card he had been presented with was a total forgery.
