Carbon monoxide poisoning: 13-year-old dead

On Sunday evening, a tragic accident occurred in an apartment in Penzing, Vienna. A 13-year-old girl lost her life due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

The girl wanted to take a shower in the evening. After about 20 minutes, relatives became concerned, reported police spokesman Markus Dittrich. They checked the bathroom and found the unconscious 13-year-old on the floor.

All help came too late
After getting the teenager out of the shower, they immediately alerted the emergency services and began initial resuscitation attempts. The Vienna Fire Brigade continued the resuscitation efforts. But without success.

"At the same time, the rooms were ventilated, also with the help of a high-performance fan, and the adjoining apartments were checked." Neighbors were not affected, according to fire department spokesman Jürgen Figerl.

Significant backlog in the exhaust system
The professional fire department later detected significantly increased levels of the toxic gas at the scene of the accident in Onno-Klopp-Gasse. According to initial investigations, the accident was triggered "during the operation of the room air-dependent gas boiler" in the bathroom.

In total, three people have already died from CO poisoning in apartments in this extremely hot summer in Vienna, according to data from the professional fire department.
