New bridge with monument for old one

The Mautern Danube Bridge is a matter of concern for politicians, business, agriculture and conservationists. Because a renewed or even new bridge is needed. But the question of how is dividing opinion. Now there is another proposed solution.

It is undisputed that the Danube bridge between Krems-Stein and Mautern is in need of renovation. Previous proposals have ranged from operating the ferry during the work to a two-bridge variant - as reported by the "Krone".

"Solution with common sense"
Now the Krems ÖVP is bringing another idea into play. "We want a common-sense solution," says Deputy Mayor Florian Kamleitner. His proposal: building a new, identical-looking bridge, then dismantling the old structure to create a monument.

It is also a fact that a solution can only be found together with the Federal Monuments Office. And as quickly as possible, because the Danube bridge is in a very poor condition.

Expensive or impractical
Kamleitner rejects a two-bridge solution - one for motorists, the other for cyclists and pedestrians - as too expensive. And a ferry would be too much of a restriction for commuters, businesses and winegrowers. The ÖVP politician calls for negotiations with the Federal Monuments Office about his "common-sense solution".
