Several hundred dead wild birds discovered in Bavaria

Several hundred wild birds have died in Pocking in Bavaria. It is still unclear what caused the birds to die. A viral infection has been ruled out.

According to the Passau District Office, the carcasses had already been found last week and collected by the veterinary office. Some of them were sent to a laboratory for examination. It is still unclear what caused the birds to die. There are no indications of a viral infection and research is continuing.

Highly endangered lapwing dies
Among the dead birds is a highly endangered lapwing. The Nature Conservation Association named it Bird of the Year 2024. According to the district office, there is no danger to the population, but dead animals should not be touched.

The district office continues to monitor the affected lapwing compensation area, which had to be created in the past for the construction of the A94. Dead animals are also still being collected.
