Car on fire paralyzed the Westautobahn

Fire alarm on the A1 Westautobahn! A car burst into flames early on Friday afternoon. Three alerted fire departments quickly had the fire under control and one lane could be reopened after around 20 minutes. The four occupants had freed themselves and no one was injured.

The fire was burning brightly and a thick black cloud of smoke towered into the sky above the high-roof station wagon. The diesel-powered car had suddenly caught fire on the A1 Westautobahn between Oberwang and Mondsee. The driver had still managed to steer the car onto the emergency lane.

No casualties
"The four occupants had freed themselves from the burning vehicle unharmed, so we were able to concentrate immediately on fighting the fire in the vehicle," reported incident commander Robert Grabner from the Oberwang fire department. 

Removed immediately
The fire was quickly brought under control by the Innerschwand, Oberschwand and Mondsee volunteer fire departments. The Westautobahn was only completely closed for around 20 minutes, the entire closure lasted less than three quarters of an hour. The road was then cleaned up.
