Next thunderstorm front with hail moves across the country

In the course of Saturday, severe thunderstorms will once again move across large parts of Austria: there is a risk of large hail and strong gusts of wind. Lower Austria and Burgenland are under a violet - and therefore the strongest - severe weather warning.

At around 2.30 p.m., a heavy thunderstorm front moved across the southern Vienna Basin. In the district of Neunkirchen, hailstones the size of a two-euro coin fell from the sky.

Visitors to the Jansa barracks in Großmittel in the district of Wiener Neustadt, where the open day took place on Saturday, were also surprised by the storm. Within seconds, visitors had to flee to safety from the large hailstones.

As reported by the Austrian Severe Weather Center, a supercell also formed in western Burgenland, causing numerous fire department operations. The main areas of operation were flooded cellars and roads.

Vienna, Upper Austria, Carinthia, Styria and Tyrol are currently under a red storm warning. Thunderstorms and hail are also expected here during the evening.

According to Geosphere Austria, the forecast for Sunday is for more hot, humid and thundery weather. Heavy thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail and squalls are possible, especially in the afternoon hours. The maximum daily temperature is 28 degrees.
