Taekwondo fighter Marlene Jahl was not granted great success in her last career outing!

The athlete in the over 73 kg category lost to the top seeded Turkish world champion Nafia Kus Aydin in the quarter-finals at the European Championships in Belgrade on Friday after retiring due to injury and finished fifth. The Upper Austrian had landed awkwardly after a kick with her right foot, was in pain and could no longer perform.

"I hope nothing is broken!"
"Fighting on would have been pointless. I hope nothing is broken," explained the 29-year-old army athlete. Her coach of many years, Markus Weidinger, was satisfied with his protégé's performance: "To come fifth at the European Championships speaks volumes for the quality that Marlene brought to the mat right up to the last fight."

Jahl narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Olympics this year and then decided to end her career.
