Bayern plain speaking
Matthäus: Alaba causes 280 million euro chaos
Lothar Matthäus once again comes down hard on Bayern! The record international player's thesis: David Alaba's transfer-free departure from FC Bayern to Real Madrid in the summer of 2021 would have cost the German record champions "an enormous amount economically".
"If they had paid Alaba five million euros more in salary at the time, they wouldn't have had to let him go on a free transfer and invest 280 million euros in new players," ranted Matthäus in his column for Sky. "Alaba's departure caused chaos in Bayern's defense and cost them a lot economically. It would have been much cheaper for him to stay."
Now, however, the failed defense in the first leg against Real Madrid would reveal the serious consequences of this mistake.
Learning the lessons
What does this mean for the future of FC Bayern and its transfer policy? Matthäus hopes that lessons have been learned from the Alaba case for the upcoming contract negotiations with key players such as Kimmich and Sane.
