A fire broke out at Salzburg Airport Center on Thursday morning. The Wals, Viehhausen, Großgmain, Fürstenbrunn and Siezenheim fire departments are on duty alongside the Salzburg professional fire department. The fire started in a connecting corridor between DM and the outlet center.
Alert level four was declared: "Fires requiring more than two fire engines, e.g. fire in an agricultural building, fire in an industrial building, etc."
The DM headquarters, the McDonald's and the buildings around it were evacuated as quickly as possible. The first people had to be taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.
The fire has now been extinguished and the extinguishing work is underway, as district fire brigade commander Klaus Lugstein said in response to an inquiry from "Krone". Two breathing apparatus teams are still dealing with any embers.
A total of around 150 firefighters are on site. The buildings should be released again soon after the evacuation.
With an area of 200,000 square meters, the Airport Center in Wals is the largest commercial complex in western Austria. It includes a shopping center with an area of 44,000 square meters.
