Salzburg woman killed
Mild sentence in the case of diver Verena
In 2019, a woman from Salzburg died in an accident with a speedboat in Croatia. A court has now sentenced the driver (31) to one and a half years in prison. This was not even the minimum sentence.
Almost five years ago, on July 24, 2019, Verena H. was hit by a speedboat in the sea near the island of Krk and died of her injuries in hospital shortly afterwards.
Croatian media are now reporting a verdict - and it was a lenient one. In Rijeka, the driver (31) of the boat was sentenced to one and a half years in prison, not legally binding. Among other things, the court cited his good conduct up until the tragic accident as the reason why the prison sentence is below the usual minimum sentence of three years for this offense. The man has to pay 1610 euros in court costs.
Verena, a trained freediver, had been training with her father Dieter for an event in Indonesia and had marked the dive site with a buoy.
