After Leon Pauger from Vorarlberg recently showed an upward trend with 21st place at the Sprint World Cup in Wollongong (Aus), a bitter setback followed on Monday at the World Cup competition over the Olympic distance in Chengdu (Chn).

"I already felt weak during the swim," said the 25-year-old army athlete, who came out of the water in 40th place, already one minute behind. "Then I was in the third group on the bike and at that point I was already three minutes behind the leaders."

The race was over early
The man from Bregenz was only 43rd and had no great hopes for the final 10-kilometer run. "Even with a good run, it wouldn't have been enough for a result in the top 30," Pauger was convinced, who lost a total of 12:38 minutes by the finish, placing him 46th and penultimate. "An Olympic start in Paris is probably out of the question for me. The chances are now very, very slim."
