Turnaround in St. Pölten
After protest: End for controversial road reconstruction
The controversial Kiss & Ride zone in front of the new school campus in St. Pölten is not going ahead after all. Mayor Stadler reacted to the protests and removed the item from the municipal council's agenda.
Everything had actually already been planned down to the last detail and should have just been decided at the municipal council meeting on Monday. But now the redesign of Grillparzerstrasse in St. Pölten is off the table. Mayor Matthias Stadler exercised his right to remove the item from the agenda. "If the parents' association has the express wish for no change, then we will comply," he explains.
We would have worked out a compromise between safety and accessibility. However, if the parents' association does not wish to change anything, then we will forego the conversion.

As reported, there had been protests against the original plans. These plans would have included the reconstruction of the road as part of the multi-million euro investment in the school campus. 43 parking spaces would have been removed and a so-called Kiss & Ride zone would have been created instead. However, because this would have been built on an area of the school garden, parents even launched a petition against the project. They were supported by the Greens, who had announced an amendment for the municipal council meeting.
However, according to Stadler, the planned traffic calming of Grillparzerstraße up to Maria Theresia-Straße will not change. However, only a minimal number of parking spaces will be removed to create a turning area. A total of around nine million euros will be invested in the elementary school, kindergarten and music school.
