Tournament in Hilton Head
Golf: Final round interrupted due to heavy rain
The final round of the PGA golf tournament in Hilton Head, South Carolina, could not be completed as scheduled on Sunday. A thunderstorm with heavy rain and lightning caused an interruption. The course was badly damaged in places at the time. Sepp Straka had completed eleven holes in difficult conditions, partly due to the rain and wind, and had to accept dropping back to twelfth place for the time being.
After the first three rounds on the par 71 course, the Viennese had always been among the absolute leaders in fourth, first and finally second place. On the final day, however, things did not go according to plan for the 2023 Ryder Cup champion early on, with bogeys on the third, fourth and seventh holes.
Straka is just two shots off six players in second place
The brief upward trend with birdies on the eighth and tenth was immediately halted again with a dropped shot on the eleventh before the players had to find their way back to the clubhouse. Nevertheless, a top placing was still within reach, as they were only two strokes off six players in second place.
Only the US world number one and Augusta winner Scottie Scheffler was out of reach, and with a four-stroke lead, the 3.6 million dollar victory should no longer be out of his reach.
This means that Straka's third PGA title after those in Palm Beach Gardens (Florida/2022) and Silvis (Illinois/2023) will probably not become a reality for the time being. Straka's best result to date at the RBC Heritage was third place with 272 strokes in 2022. He was 33rd in 2020, 59th in 2021 and clearly missed the cut last year.
