A rather unusual natural spectacle recently took place in front of a supermarket in the city of Shouzhou in China. A dust devil spiraled around 30 meters high into the sky.

The mini whirlwind swirled across the parking lot of the supermarket in the metropolis in Jiangsu province and lasted only a few minutes.

Such dust devils - which are also frequently observed in desert regions - are created when the surface of the earth is heated by solar radiation. The rotating warm air whirls up sand and dust, causing the sand or dust devils to appear to dance like a small ghost.
