Janosch" quietly found himself a new home here. The lynx had migrated from the north to Waidhofen an der Thaya in the Waldviertel.

"He is quite a lively male. We call lynxes of this sex Kuder in our hunting language," says master hunter Josef Pröll, delighted at the sight. The good "Janosch" was first spotted in the Czech Republic in 2022 as one of two cubs. Since then, the "tomcat with the brush ears" has regularly appeared in the border area with the Czech Republic, where he was monitored by experts there.

Now, however, the secretive cat of prey has become a true Waldviertel native. Because he had been spotted time and again by blue and yellow hunters who had documented the sneaking of the strictly protected four-legged friend over the seasons using photos. "Janosch" was last seen roaming near Waidhofen an der Thaya, around 80 kilometers from the neighboring country to the north.

The zoological working group led by Peter Gerngross and Kirsten Weingarth-Dachs has succeeded in clarifying the origin of the rare lynx. Both conduct research in various nature conservation groups.
