Huge avalanche causes police intervention

Although the avalanche danger is currently low to moderate according to the warning service, an avalanche occurred on Gmeineck in Seeboden (Carinthia) on Thursday morning.

A snow slab broke loose on the Gmeineck in the early hours of the morning. The considerable avalanche was clearly visible from the Drau Valley. A search was even carried out for any buried victims. "In the early afternoon, there was a sighting flight with the dragonfly by the alpine police," reports Horst Wohlgemuth, head of operations. "There were no signs of possible buried victims."

The slope is not a typical ski touring area. Nevertheless, the danger should not be underestimated. "The descent was a 200-metre-wide sliding snow avalanche," explains Wohlgemuth. There is also a low avalanche danger in East Tyrol and a moderate danger in the Venediger and Glockner groups.
