27 criminal proceedings
According to Kiev, Russians shot 50 prisoners of war
According to the Ukrainian public prosecutor's office, it is aware of 54 cases in which Russian soldiers are alleged to have shot Ukrainian prisoners of war. A total of 27 criminal proceedings have been initiated.
The first shooting of a Ukrainian prisoner of war was registered in March 2022. There has already been a court ruling on a shooting case involving a Russian soldier in the northern Ukrainian region of Chernihiv.
In most cases, however, investigations are hampered by the fact that Ukrainian investigators have no access to the site or the body.
Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for over two years. Between the beginning of December last year and the end of February alone, the United Nations received reports of twelve incidents in which at least 32 Ukrainian prisoners of war were shot dead.
UN verifies three cases
The UN observers were able to verify three cases. In 2022 and early 2023, however, the shooting of 25 Russian prisoners of war by Ukrainian soldiers was also documented.
