Trump: No postponement in hush money trial
Former US President Donald Trump has suffered a setback in court. On Monday, a New York appeals court rejected Trump's request to postpone his criminal trial for hush money payments to a porn actress, which had been scheduled for April 15. Trump had filed the motion in an attempt to move the case out of Manhattan and thus delay the trial.
The criminal proceedings against Trump regarding a hush money payment to a porn actress will therefore take place in the middle of the election campaign. This means that the jury will almost certainly decide on the guilt or innocence of the Republican and presidential candidate before the election in early November. As in all his court proceedings, the 77-year-old has denied any guilt in the trial.
Hush money to porn star
The charges against Trump were brought by a grand jury. They accused him of falsifying business documents in connection with a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
His former lawyer Michael Cohen paid her 130,000 dollars for her silence about a sexual encounter with Trump. According to her account, this allegedly took place in 2006. Trump has denied having had a sexual encounter with the woman, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford. However, he admitted to having reimbursed Cohen for his payment to her.
Presidential candidate Trump is effectively tied with Democratic incumbent Joe Biden according to election polls.
