Hours-long operation
Mega traffic jam after vehicle fire on the highway
On Friday afternoon, a vehicle burst into flames on the Rhine Valley highway near Bregenz at Lauterach. The result was a traffic jam more than ten kilometers long in the direction of Germany.
It all happened very quickly: at around 2 p.m., a 46-year-old driver suddenly saw the oil warning light flash, and seconds later smoke was already billowing from the rear. He had the presence of mind to steer his car onto the emergency lane and get out. Luckily, the entire vehicle was on fire shortly afterwards, and the burning fuel was spread across the road.
Road closed for several hours
The emergency services from the Dornbirn fire department were able to extinguish the car quickly, but there was nothing left to save. Two of the three lanes had to be closed until 4.30 p.m. for the cleaning and recovery work - resulting in an eleven-kilometer-long tailback to Hohenems. Nobody was injured.
