Hinterhäuser’s “long experience” speaks for itself

Markus Hinterhäuser will remain Artistic Director of the Salzburg Festival until 2031. The planned million-euro renovation played into the 66-year-old's hands.

As reported, the 66-year-old will remain Artistic Director of the Salzburg Festival. Hinterhäuser prevailed against four competitors at the hearing - the upcoming multi-million euro renovation of the Festival Houses certainly played into his hands.

"All the applicants had their qualities, the discussions were very good," says Salzburg's current mayor Harald Preuner (ÖVP). He was part of the jury at the Festival hearings on Thursday. A total of seven men and one woman applied for the position of Artistic Director of the Salzburg Festival, with five making it onto the shortlist.

"Experience spoke in favor of Markus Hinterhäuser. He is best placed to oversee the renovation of the Festival Houses," says Preuner. The decision in favor of Markus Hinterhäuser was unanimous. The 66-year-old will therefore remain Artistic Director until 2031 and his contract will be extended. However, there is a mutual termination option with effect from September 30, 2029.
