Tragedy! Footballer shot dead during kidnapping
Defender Luke Fleurs was shot dead near Johannesburg on Wednesday. The tragedy occurred during a failed carjacking. The police are not yet able to comment on the circumstances.
Fleurs was a central defender for South African cult club Kaizer Chiefs and also played for various youth teams of the national team. On Wednesday evening, he was in a town around 15 kilometers from Johannesburg when the tragedy occurred.
The 24-year-old was caught up in an incident in which a car was apparently to be robbed. In the course of the attempted kidnapping, the footballer was shot and, according to initial information, died on the spot. The police are not yet able to comment on the events.
"Will not be forgotten"
In the meantime, the Kaizer Chiefs have also confirmed the death of their player. "May his dear soul rest in peace," said the club. The friendly club, Cape Town, also reacted and wrote on X: "We are saddened to learn of the passing of Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs".
The central defender played for South Africa's U17 and U23 teams and was allowed to participate with the team at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The provincial Minister of Culture and Sport said in a statement: "He died too young - a tragic victim of crime in South Africa. His legacy will not be forgotten."
