Man stabs four-year-old in supermarket

In the German town of Wangen im Allgäu (Baden-Württemberg), just a few kilometers from the Austrian border, a 34-year-old man attacked and seriously injured a small child with a knife in public on Wednesday afternoon. The background to this unbelievable crime is still unclear. However, the victim and perpetrator did not know each other. 

For no apparent reason, the man attacked the girl in a supermarket in the late afternoon and stabbed her several times with a knife - until a courageous witness intervened and overpowered the 34-year-old.

Girl undergoes emergency surgery
It was also the witness who informed the police. When the officers arrived on the scene, the perpetrator was arrested without resistance. Meanwhile, the four-year-old was taken to hospital and immediately underwent emergency surgery. The relieving news followed shortly afterwards: the toddler's life was out of danger.

Suspect did not know the child
There are still many unanswered questions about the crime itself. One thing is certain, however: "The two did not know each other until then, and there was probably no previous relationship," said a police spokeswoman. The police have announced that they will announce the initial results of the investigation at a press conference on Thursday. The suspect is also due to appear before a magistrate on Thursday afternoon.
