Incident in the Zillertal
Unreasonableness: Easter fires out of control in the storm
Almost at the same time as the province of Tyrol issued a warning on Holy Saturday against lighting Easter fires due to the Föhn storm, such an incident occurred in the Zillertal. The fire department had to be called out to extinguish the forest fire.
The fire broke out in Stummerberg, near Gattererberg, at around 3.15 p.m., burning approximately 60 square meters of forest. According to the information available so far, a 76-year-old local man wanted to make a so-called Easter fire and set fire to bushes and sawdust.
Triggered by a gust of wind
When a strong gust of wind suddenly blew into the fire, an embankment fire broke out, producing a lot of smoke. Uninvolved witnesses therefore called the fire department. The Stumm/Stummerberg volunteer fire department was finally able to extinguish the flames at around 3.50 pm.
No persons were injured as a result of the incident. Three vehicles and 23 firefighters were deployed. It remains to be seen whether the 76-year-old will face any consequences.
