"Rethink the concept"
Hamann calls for ex-captain as new Bayern coach
Dietmar Hamann has put forward former Bayern captain Mark Van Bommel as Thomas Tuchel's successor. The record champions should focus on a younger coach rather than a "world coach on the move".
"From my point of view, the aim must be to bring in a coach who is keen to guide young players like Pavlovic. Not another world coach who is just passing through," Hamann told the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Instead of securing someone like Tuchel, Munich should focus on "younger alternatives" in the search for a suitable coach. According to Hamann, former Bayern captain Mark Van Bommel would be a good option.
New criticism of Tuchel
The Dutchman is currently under contract with Royal Antwerp until 2025. The 46-year-old has already played for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, but had to leave after just 13 games. Nevertheless, Van Bommel has quality and could be particularly important for the development of young players, the expert believes.
Hamann also reiterated his criticism of Tuchel: "I think a coach should be allowed to criticize players publicly, but he shouldn't deny their fundamental suitability. Otherwise, you shouldn't be surprised if you lose the players." Nevertheless, he understands that the outgoing coach did not find the situation at the record champions easy.
