Caught by hand
Truck trailer with thousands of chickens overturned
A clucking accident on Friday morning between Lacken and Feldkirchen in Upper Austria: a truck trailer carrying thousands of chickens overturned on a bend. The truck had loaded a total of 9000 of the animals. The fire department was able to catch and rescue some of them by hand.
It is still unclear how the accident happened. The truck's trailer overturned on a bend in Mühllacknerstraße on Friday morning and came to rest halfway in the ditch. The trailer was carrying around half of the 9,000 chickens that had been transported in the truck.
Florianis caught the chickens
"Fortunately, we are a large team, we caught some of the chickens carefully and stored them in crates," Thomas Barth, head of operations for the Lacken volunteer fire department, told the "Krone" newspaper.
However, the majority of the poultry remained locked in the transport crates in the overturned trailer. It is still unclear how many of the animals did not survive the accident.
Trailer is being set up
"We are working on getting the trailer upright," says Barth about the ongoing operation. Most of the animal boxes remain in the trailer, others are being reloaded into a new truck.
The Lacken fire brigade was deployed with three cars and around 20 firefighters. A towing company was called in to help move the trailer.
