GameStop withdraws from Austria
The US video game retailer GameStop announces the withdrawal from its stores in Austria, Switzerland and Ireland. There are also plans to cut jobs in order to reduce costs.
"It has been an unforgettable journey full of adventures and epic moments. But unfortunately, the time has come to end our quest as of August 1, 2023," says the Austrian GameStop website. Anyone who still has unredeemed credit on a voucher should contact customer service directly.
The figures for the fourth quarter were disappointing. Sales amounted to 1.79 billion dollars (around 1.65 billion euros) compared to 2.23 billion dollars a year earlier. GameStop's shares plummeted 16 percent after the close of trading.
In the face of high inflation, the company is feeling the effects of consumer restraint and competition from online retailers such as Amazon and eBay.
